Google AI Overviews in India: what they are and why your brand should care

Open Google in India today and your search often starts with an answer, not a list of links. That block at the top, where Google's AI summarises a response and cites a few sources, is an AI Overview. For most Indians it is the AI answer they will meet most often, because it sits right inside the search they already use. If your brand is in it, you win attention before anyone scrolls. If not, the links below it matter a little less every month.

What an AI Overview actually is

An AI Overview is Google generating a short answer to your query and pulling in a handful of sources to support it. It appears above the familiar blue links, for many informational and, increasingly, commercial questions. The user gets a direct answer and a few cited pages, and often never scrolls past it.

Why it matters more in India

Two reasons. First, Google's share of search in India is very high, so whatever Google does to its results page reaches almost everyone. Second, India is heavily mobile, and on a phone the AI Overview can fill the screen, pushing ordinary results further out of sight. The net effect is that the AI answer becomes the result for a large share of users.

It is a separate surface from the chat engines

Here is the part brands miss. AI Overviews choose their own sources. Being cited by ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity does not mean you appear in Google's AI Overview, and the reverse is also true. The zero click reality

AI Overviews change the deal. Your brand can be more visible, named right there in the answer, while your clicks go down, because the user got what they needed without visiting your site. That is uncomfortable, but it means the thing to track is whether you are cited and recommended, not only whether you rank. Traditional rank tracking quietly stops telling the whole story.

How to think about it, honestly

There is no trick that guarantees a spot in an AI Overview, and anyone selling one is overpromising. What is reasonable is to treat it like the other engines: find out whether you currently appear for the questions that matter, see who is being cited instead of you, and test changes to learn what actually moves your presence.
