Most people picture "AI search" as one thing: you ask a question, the AI gives an answer. But there is no single AI answer. ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity are three different systems, and when you ask them the same buying question, they often name different brands and link different sources. For a brand trying to be found, that difference is the whole game.
It is natural to check ChatGPT, see your brand mentioned, and assume you are doing fine in AI search. The problem is that ChatGPT is roughly one third of the picture. A customer comparing products might ask Gemini inside Google, or open Perplexity for its sources. If those two ignore you, you are invisible to most of the people who never touch ChatGPT.
The engines are built differently, and it shows in what they cite:
These are tendencies, not rules, and all three keep changing. But the direction is consistent: ask the same question three times across three engines and you frequently get three different shortlists.
This is not just our impression. Across a large set of Indian category questions, we found that the three engines shared only a small fraction of their cited sources, and the published research on AI answers points the same way. The engine that cites you and the engine that ignores you can be looking at almost completely different parts of the web. You can read what the peer reviewed evidence does and does not show on our research page.
A few practical consequences:
The honest way to know where you stand is to ask all three engines your real category questions, repeatedly, because their answers also vary from one run to the next. We walk through how to do that by hand in how to check if ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite your brand in India. It works for a few questions. To measure your real visibility across dozens of questions and three engines, several times each, you need software.
That is what we built Citedar to do, specifically for Indian brands and in both English and Hindi. If you want to see how each engine treats your brand right now, get a free audit.
